Debido al gran influjo de turistas, Pattaya ha convertido sus mejores playas en un estado bastante lamentable, sin bromear: cuando en un mar de por sí turbio ves bolsas de plástico y otros desechos flotando, realmente ni siquiera quieres hablar de lo que hay en esa agua.

Si buscas unas vacaciones de playa, te recomendamos considerar un viaje a la Isla Koh Lan, la Playa Militar o la Playa de la Chica Bailarina, sobre todo si viajas con niños. Todo lo peor que puedas imaginar se concentra en este tramo de la costa de Pattaya; me refiero a la limpieza del agua. No es que esté sucia, está excesivamente sucia. En la orilla en sí no se ve tan mal: una playa estándar con tumbonas (sillas) y turistas tomando el sol.

La mezcla de nacionalidades de los veraneantes es enorme: verás asiáticos, indios, muchos europeos, etc. En cuanto a lo “exótico”, hay bastantes personas trans, trabajadores sexuales e incluso “machos” europeos mayores que pagan compañía durante todo el viaje. Los reconocerás de inmediato… También hay gente joven a la que le gusta pasear por la zona, aunque más al anochecer.

La mayor ventaja es su ubicación. Al estar cerca del centro, puedes ir caminando a cualquier cafetería o salón de masajes tierra adentro, ya que en el paseo marítimo todo es más caro.

A modo de referencia, en algunas playas tendrías que tomar transporte para llegar a servicios más baratos —por la distancia— o dar una larga caminata.

Las desventajas aquí son mucho mayores. Además del agua sucia, encontramos:

• Multitudes de gente (sobre todo en el paseo marítimo, que va justo al lado de la playa. Los turistas van y vienen en ambas direcciones, y la playa en sí no está mejor);
• Vendedores muy insistentes (además de comida, constantemente ofrecen varios tours, tatuajes, bebidas frías, etc.);
• Gran cantidad de motos acuáticas y embarcaciones (las motos acuáticas van y vienen, los botes atracan y los turistas suben y bajan);
• Mucho ruido (la multitud genera un caos indescriptible, que con el tiempo dejas de notar en gran medida);
• Olores (hay una mezcla de olores; ¿cómo un lugar puede oler bien y mal al mismo tiempo? No digo que haya un hedor constante en la playa central, pero sí hay zonas desagradables para el olfato).

En cuanto a la playa en sí, tiene la típica arena amarilla de Pattaya, algo gruesa. La marea baja es muy notoria, prácticamente todos los días de verano desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

Y la desventaja más grande es la carretera que pasa junto a la playa. Hay mucho ruido y está sucio…

Si te hospedas cerca, lo único que te recomendaría es tomar el sol aquí, pero de ninguna manera pasar todas tus vacaciones en esta playa, pues hay lugares mucho más interesantes, pintorescos y limpios.

A nice place to sit back and relax. The beach is not that great or impressive but a calm and relaxing place to hangout. Next to the beach is a beautiful promenade and road, whose one is lined up with all kinds of shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels.

I used to like walking all along the beach road under the trees, it was really nice place to be. Unfortunately the authorities decided that it needs "improving" so now the entire length is a construction site and will be so for probably a year. Dining in the many excellent restaurants opposite the beach I had to endure construction machinery and trucks. This work is totally unnecessary as it was just fine before, it was only 2 to 3 years ago that the paving was completely renewed for improved safety and appearance.

La playa de Jomtien no es mucho mejor que la primera opción. Es una enorme playa alargada dividida en tres partes según su ubicación:

1. Norte.
2. Centro.
3. Sur.

El agua, ya sea en el norte o en el sur, suele ser igual de sucia. En el agua puedes encontrar basura (no solo algas, sino también residuos humanos como bolsas de plástico o botellas). A veces hay invasión de medusas y no sabes si es plástico o una medusa. Brr…

En Jomtien también hay mareas bajas, igual que en la playa central.

La costa también varía. La arena es la misma de siempre, pero la parte norte es más ancha que la sur (en algunas zonas del sur, el agua llega casi hasta la acera). En consecuencia, en la zona norte se concentra más gente que en la sur. Verás un público de todo tipo. Si no quieres ver personajes exóticos, aléjate un poco hacia el centro, porque todos se reúnen en la parte norte.

Hay suficientes cafeterías, puestos de comida callejera (makashnits) y tiendas de recuerdos; los precios son más bajos que en el centro pero más altos que tierra adentro en Pattaya. También hay un mercado de frutas.

Por 10 baht puedes tomar un tuk-tuk hasta el centro.

La playa de Jomtien ofrece un paisaje decente para tomar fotos con vista lejana de Koh Lan o grabar videos.

Un amplio paseo marítimo bordea la playa, con palmeras en algunos tramos, vagamente reminiscentes de Miami —aunque muy vagamente— pero aun así.

Hay tumbonas en la playa y, por la tarde, es importante coger las de la primera fila porque, pese a sus desventajas, la vista al atardecer es cautivadora.

En Jomtien no te toparás con los olores desagradables que hay en el centro, porque las autoridades han intentado retirar la basura de la orilla.

Next to Pattaya beach but a bit more secluded and has a different feel to it. Plenty of restaurants and bars within easy reach, plus many shaded areas but these are often taken over by the consortiums selling deck chair space. Also a bit of a wind surfing beach.

Very nice stretch of beach, sea is much cleaner here than Pattaya and easily reachable by Songthaew for just 20 Baht from Pattaya. At the south end you have a car park and the north end beach volley ball areas. Along the length of the beach you have three zones, the open beach itself, then the strip of sun loungers with parasols, then a nice shaded tree lined area where many vendors setup to serve people using the beach. Behind the tree lined area at the back you have a paved promenade. There is a huge boomed protected swimming area and outside of this several watersports. You can hire windsurfing boards and there are quite a few ladies offering beach massages on large mats covering the sand. There are a couple of toilet blocks along the beach with 5 Baht usage fee and several restaurants the other side of road running behind the beach.

La playa de Dongtan es una “laguna azul”, no por el agua limpia, sino por la gran cantidad de gente con orientaciones sexuales no tradicionales que se reúne aquí. Por alguna razón, es aquí donde hay muchos de ellos, así que a los homófobos quizá no les guste nada este lugar y prefieran omitir esta sección.

En general, para los estándares tailandeses, Dongtan Beach está bastante bien y, según algunas opiniones, tiene el agua más limpia durante la temporada alta.

La arena es la misma de siempre, al igual que la marea baja.

Hay un amplio camino peatonal cerca de la playa, perfecto para pasear por la tarde. La playa se encuentra en la zona de Pratumnak, considerada la parte más lujosa de la ciudad. Ese estatus influye en los precios, que son algo más elevados, pero seamos sinceros, no son tan altos, sobre todo si se comparan con Phuket.

Como en cualquier otro lugar, de julio a octubre no es agradable bañarse aquí porque hay muchas medusas durante esa época (parece que están en temporada).

Probably the best beach in Pattaya if you don't count Ko Lan. Backed up by supple greenery this beach in a veritable oasis, with lots of shade and deck chairs. However, in high season, it is rather crowded (teeming with Russians), and it can be a challenge to get a deck chair (100 Baht). Moreover, there is unfortunately some pollution on the beach, which even may be hazardous. Be careful where you step.

Cosy Beach se considera ya un lugar bastante decente en comparación con los anteriores. Se podría clasificar entre las mejores playas de Pattaya con hoteles, ya que justo en la orilla está el hotel Cosy Beach, que a menudo se llena por completo alrededor de dos meses antes de la fecha de llegada planeada.

No es muy cómodo llegar a Cosy Beach, pues los tuk-tuks no pasan por esta zona, así que tendrás que pagar un taxi o ir caminando. Más abajo tienes un mapa —averígualo— la playa está justo delante del hotel marcado.

Finalmente, la playa más adecuada para unas verdaderas vacaciones de sol y mar es Wongamat. Alrededor de Wongamat hay muchos hoteles (desde uno hasta cinco estrellas) y condominios, así que la principal desventaja es la falta de infraestructura cercana. Para llegar a una tienda más o menos económica, hay que salir de la playa, y para tomar un tuk-tuk, debes subir una colina (no es una subida muy fuerte, más o menos como la subida por Pattaya Park en Pratumnak).

Por lo demás, la playa está bastante bien. En comparación con otros lugares, el agua está más o menos limpia (aunque sigue siendo turbia), y quizá sea el único sitio donde nos arriesgaríamos a bañarnos si no tuviéramos la opción de Pattaya o las islas.

La arena aquí parece un poco más blanca, y quizá sea mérito de los hoteles en primera línea, que quieren que su litoral luzca bien y así atraer a los huéspedes.

Hoteles con playa

Para quienes prefieren hospedarse en un hotel que tenga su propia playa, hemos elaborado una pequeña selección. Así que aquí están los mejores hoteles de Pattaya con playa propia:

No nos alejaremos mucho de Wongamat Beach, donde se ubica el Hotel Centara Grand Mirage Beach.

Esta maravilla de cinco estrellas no solo cuenta con playa privada, sino también con un enorme parque acuático, así que tendrás espacio de sobra para pasear. Hay varias opciones de alojamiento, pero lamentablemente no son económicas.

Otro hotel de cinco estrellas es el Royal Cliff Beach Hotel, también ubicado en Wongamat.

Al comparar estos dos hoteles, la diferencia es que el segundo no cuenta con parque acuático. Por lo demás, lo mismo de siempre: varios restaurantes, piscinas, spa, vistas magníficas al mar y, cómo no, precios elevados.

Un escalón más abajo en precio está el Adriatic Palace Hotel Pattaya.

Este hotel está en Jomtien, y aunque tiene su propia playa, recomendamos bañarse en la piscina, diseñada al estilo europeo —al igual que todo lo demás en el hotel.

Un poco más lejos está el Ambassador City Jomtien.

Se llega por la carretera que sale desde el centro. Los terrenos bien decorados no dejan indiferente a ningún turista, y el servicio también es claramente una prioridad aquí.

En Cosy Beach está el hotel de tres estrellas Cosy Beach Hotel.

Aunque solo tiene tres estrellas, presume de contar con playa propia, lo cual es bastante raro en establecimientos de esta categoría. Puedes leer más abajo.

Finalmente, probablemente uno de los hoteles más visitados de Pattaya está en la playa Wongprachan: el Garden Sea View Resort. También es de tres estrellas y cuenta con buenas reseñas de turistas.
