If you think that every beach near Patong is noisy and unsuitable for a peaceful family getaway, think again. Tri Trang Beach is precisely the kind of place that attracts travelers looking for calm and serene relaxation.
General Information
Tri Trang Beach in Phuket isn’t the quietest beach on the island, but it’s the only one so close to the island’s central party place. Here, you can hide from the daytime hustle of Patong and then immerse yourself in its nightlife. If you look at the map, you’ll notice that Tri Trang Beach is located just to the left of Patong, offering a convenient escape without being too far from the action.
Locals call it Tritrang, Tri Tra, or even Emerald Beach, but among European tourists, ‘Tri Trang’ has become the standard name.
The beach itself is small, only 700 meters long, and its width depends directly on Phuket’s tidal fluctuations because Tri Trang Beach is quite sensitive to low tide.
The sand here is light, with shades of yellow, and fairly fine. The sand is well-maintained and clean, with only minimal debris if one actively searches for it.
There aren’t many tourists here despite being close to the island’s central beach. Most are European visitors. In the past, Tri Trang Beach was a favorite spot for locals, and travelers only discovered it relatively recently (some have yet to do so). Suffice it to say, you won’t find crowds here; even in high season, there’s plenty of space, and you can easily arrive at any time to sunbathe and swim.
The beach area belongs to Tri Trang Beach Resort Phuket, which is why it’s so clean.

Water Entry and Shore
The water here is turquoise, its color largely determined by whether it’s low tide or high tide.
The sea entry is gentle and flat, making it ideal for a leisurely swim during high tide. However, at low tide, you might need to walk a bit further to reach deeper water.
The width of the shoreline also depends on the tide. During high tide, it’s around 40–50 meters, but at low tide, it increases several times over.
A second drawback is the presence of sharp stones, small shells, and dead corals on the seabed. You may feel them underfoot during low tide because they’re located farther from shore, so when the water recedes, you have to cross that area. For this reason, we don’t recommend swimming out too far at high tide if you’re not familiar with it, as you might cut your feet.
It’s best to swim on the right side of the beach.
There are no waves on Tri Trang because the deep bay is well shielded from sea breezes, so even during the summer, it’s relatively calm.
The combination of calm water and a shallow, sandy seabed near the shore makes this beach an ideal place for families with children.
Beach Infrastructure
Although there is a general ban on sun loungers on most beaches, here you can still rent a lounger—likely due to the presence of a hotel along the shore. The rental fee is around 100 baht.
All amenities are found on the hotel premises, or rather along the road leading to the beach. Both showers and restrooms are paid.
Tri Trang is not a noisy beach, and there aren’t many activities, but what’s available is enough for a relaxing time:
- Banana boat rides
- Kayak rentals
- Snorkeling
- Jet-skiing
Naturally, if you get bored, you can always head to Patong, which has far more options.
It’s worth noting that if you’re searching for a beach on Phuket that has swings, you need to come here. The beach has several improvised swings that can even hold the weight of an adult.
There is shade on the beach, provided naturally by a wealth of casuarina and palm trees.
Infrastructure
Having Patong Beach about 20 minutes away on foot is a big plus, but if you don’t feel like walking “that far,” Tri Trang Beach has a handful of Thai-style fast-food stands, as well as the hotel restaurant.
Prices are comparable to Patong, though some items might be cheaper:
- Water – 20 baht
- Salads – 80–210 baht
- Rice – 40 baht
- Main dishes – 190–230 baht
- Fruit – 150–250 baht
- Ice cream – from 60 baht per scoop
You can have a meal for about 300–400 baht for two.
There’s also a small shop at the edge of Tri Trang Beach selling beach accessories and small knickknacks.
There are also a few massage spots.
The main attraction at Tri Trang Beach is the elephant—more specifically, a baby elephant. For approximately 700 baht, you can arrange to spend some time with a baby elephant – a unique experience for memorable photos and videos. It’s advisable to call ahead (+66-83-644-35-48) to confirm availability.
If sunbathing and swimming get dull, you can head to the opposite side of the island. Exactly across from Tri Trang is a cozy little bay home to Merlin Beach (Merelin Beach). Though “spans” might be too strong a word— it’s just 150 meters long—yet it’s incredibly scenic, mainly because of a coral reef slightly to the left of the beach.
Merlin Beach belongs to the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach (Phuket Marriott Resort SPA Merlin Beach), and it’s arguably the best place within about 5 km for snorkeling. Just keep that in mind.
Accommodation
Hotels on Tri Trang Beach Phuket are basically limited to the hotel of the same name if you’re talking about the first line. If first line isn’t a must, there’s a huge range of prices and comfort levels because Patong—just five minutes away by transport—offers everything from hotel rooms and apartments to entire houses, depending on your budget.
Additionally, if you just want to spend one night at the seaside, Tri Trang Beach has bungalows for rent at 1,500 baht or hotel rooms from 2,000 baht.
How to Get There
You can reach Tri Trang in two ways—on foot or by vehicle.
This is the road that leads down to the sea
Walking will take about 20 minutes, but it’s not always worth it to trek under the hot sun when you can ride a tuk-tuk or taxi for just 250 baht and enjoy the breeze.
If you plan to go to the beach using your own transport, remember you have to drive to the turn for Tri Trang Beach Resort. There’s no other route.
You can also take the free bus that heads to Paradise Beach, but it’s best to ask the driver in advance if you can get off at the Tri Trang turn, so you don’t end up looking surprised when you pass it.
All in all, Thailand offers travelers an enormous number of places, each wonderful in its own way. Tri Trang Beach is proof that even near lively Patong, you can find a tranquil spot. Don’t forget to share your impressions of your visit in the comments.
